Why Horses Need Rugs — Especially After Clipping

Clipping has many benefits for horses but essentially removes their natural insulating layer, making them more susceptible to cold temperatures, wind, and rain. A well-fitted horse rug helps to:

  • Maintain body temperature
  • Prevent chills after riding or bathing
  • Keep coats dry and clean
  • Support a healthy coat shine
  • Reduce energy loss and maintain body condition during cold weather

How To Choose the Right Rug Fill for the Temperature

Selecting the correct fill weight is crucial for your horse’s comfort. Rugs can come in a variety of weights or fills. Our new horse rugs come in two different weights:

100g Lightweight Fill

  • Ideal for spring and autumn with temperatures from around
  • Perfect for clipped horses needing a little extra warmth
  • Suitable for milder nights in the stable

200g Mediumweight Fill

  • Designed for colder winter months
  • Suitable for clipped horses or those that feel the chill
  • Offers reliable warmth indoors or outdoors

Each horse is individual and which weight of rug they need can vary in accordance to the environmental temperature, whether they have been clipped, their age, breed and body condition.

Types of Horse Rugs & Important Features to Look For

Understanding the difference between rug types helps you choose the right one for your horse’s needs. The two main types of horse rugs are turnout rugs for outdoor use and stable rugs for indoor use.

Features To Look For In Turnout Rugs

A horse turnout rug is made for outdoor use to protect your horse from mud, wind, and the unpredictable British weather.

  • Fully waterproof with a high waterproof score
  • Hardwearing Denier: This is the measure of the fabric thickness. The higher the denier, the stronger the fabric will stand up to your horse rolling, playing and wet weather. For turnout rugs, a 1200D is ideal. Our Masterclip turnout rugs have a durable outer shell of 1200D.
  • Breathable to reduce sweating under the rug.
  • Shaped to prevent rubbing and allow free movement
  • Shoulder gussets to allow for movement, especially for horses with large shoulders
  • Adjustable straps to tailor the fit to your horse.

Stable Rugs

A horse rug stable is designed for indoor use. Since they don’t need to resist rain or mud, their main focus is warmth, breathability, and comfort.

Ideal for clipped horses overnight or for maintaining warmth indoors during colder seasons.

Why Fleece Rugs Aren’t Ideal for Clipped Horses

Although fleece rugs are great for drying off after exercise, they are not suitable as a primary layer for clipped horses. Fleece traps moisture, can become damp quickly, and doesn’t provide consistent insulation. Clipped coats require a proper stable or turnout rug offering structured warmth and breathability.

Key Rug Features to Consider

When choosing a rug, look for:

  • Denier: This is the measure of the fabric. The higher the denier, the stronger it will be against rolling playing ands wet weather. For turnout rugs, a 1200D is ideal. Our Masterclip turnout rugs have a durable outer shell of 1200D.
  • Breathability to prevent sweating
  • Adjustable surcingles and secure front fastenings
  • A generous tail flap for added protection
  • Quality hardware that won’t rust
  • Reflective fabric for increased visibility and safety in low lighting during the darker, winter months.
  • A detachable neck cover for adaptable warmth

How to Measure a Horse for a Rug

Ensuring the right fit of rug for your horse is critical for their comfort, preventing rubbing, and reducing the rug from slipping.

To measure your horse correctly:

  1. Stand your horse square on level ground.

  2. Using a soft tape measure or piece of string, measure the from the centre of the chest, along the side of your horse's body level, to the point of the buttock where the back legs meet.

  3. Use the measurement in cm or inches to determine the correct rug size.

Horse Rug Size Guide

Most horse rugs are sized in feet and inches. Once you have your horse's measurement in cm or inches you can use this to work out which size rug you'll need from the table below:

  • 5’6" – 66"
  • 5’9" – 69"
  • 6’0" – 72"
  • 6’3" – 75"
  • 6’6" – 78"
  • 6’9" – 81"
  • 7’0" – 84"

If your horse is between sizes, sizing up often ensures a more comfortable fit.

Rug Fitting Top Tip:
When checking the fit of your new horse rug, make sure your horse is clean before trying it on. If that’s not practical, pop a lightweight sheet underneath to keep the rug protected. This helps keep it free from hair and marks should you need to return it if the fit isn’t quite right. Please note that soiled items may void your right to return.
