Why Horses Need Rugs — Especially After Clipping

Clipping has many benefits for horses but essentially removes their natural insulating layer, making them more susceptible to cold temperatures, wind, and rain. A well-fitted horse rug helps to:

  • Maintain body temperature when the horse isn't working.
  • Prevent chills after riding or bathing
  • Keep coats dry and clean
  • Support a healthy coat shine
  • Reduces energy loss to maintain body condition during cold weather

How To Choose the Right Rug Fill for the Temperature

Horse rugs can come in a variety of weights or fills but selecting the correct fill is crucial for your horse’s comfort. Our new horse rugs come in two different weights:

100g Lightweight Fill

  • Ideal for spring and autumn temperatures
  • Perfect for clipped horses needing a little extra warmth
  • Suitable for milder nights in the stable

200g Mediumweight Fill

  • Designed for colder winter months
  • Suitable for clipped horses or those that feel the chill
  • Offers reliable warmth indoors or outdoors

Each horse is individual and which weight of rug they need can vary in accordance to the environmental temperature, whether they have been clipped, their age, breed and body condition.

Types of Horse Rugs & Important Features to Look For

Understanding the difference between horse rug types helps you choose the right rug features for your horse’s needs. The two main types of horse rugs are turnout rugs for outdoor use and stable rugs for indoor use.

Features To Look For In Turnout Rugs

A horse turnout rug is made for protecting your horse from mud, wind, and the unpredictable British weather.

  • Waterproofing: In the UK, fabrics need a minimum hydrostatic head rating of 1,500mm  to be classed as waterproof, but this only offers basic protection during a light drizzle or brief showers. Ratings of 3,000–5,000mm provide far more reliable waterproofing in moderate to heavy rain. Masterclip turnout rugs meet this higher standard and include an extra waterproof layer for dependable, breathable protection in all weather.
  • Hardwearing Denier: This is the measure of the fabric thickness. The higher the denier, the stronger the fabric will stand up to your horse rolling, playing and general wet conditions. For turnout rugs, a durable 1200D is ideal.
  • Breathability: To reduce your horse sweating under the rug when the weather fluctuates throughout the day or they run around in the field.
  • Anatomical Shaping & Shoulder Gussets: To best suit the contours of the horse's body, prevent rubbing and allow free movement, especially for horses with large shoulders.
  • Adjustabilty: Fitted with adjustable straps to tailor the rug to the unique size of your horse.

Features To Look For In Stable Rugs

Stable rugs are designed for undercover use. Since they don’t need to resist rain or mud, their main focus is warmth, breathability, and comfort. Stable rugs are ideal for keeping clipped horses warm overnight or for maintaining warmth indoors during colder seasons.

  • Adjustability: Adjustable surcingles and secure front fastenings to keep the rug in place if the horse lies down or rolls.
  • Quality Hardware: That is comfortable and durable when the horse lies down and that won’t rust from damp or soiling.
  • Materials: A durable, smooth outer layer that is resistant to forage and bedding materials sticking to it.
  • Consistent Warmth: Ensuring the padding doesn't bunch up leaving cold spots.

How to Measure a Horse for a Rug

Ensuring the right fit of rug for your horse is essential for their comfort, preventing rubbing, and reducing the rug from slipping.

To measure your horse correctly:

  1. Stand your horse square on level ground.

  2. Using a soft tape measure or piece of string, measure the from the centre of the chest, along the side of your horse's body, level to the point of the buttock where the back legs meet.

  3. Use the measurement in cm or inches to determine the correct rug size.

Horse Rug Size Guide

Most horse rugs are sized in feet and inches. Once you have your horse's measurement in cm or inches you can use this to work out which size rug you'll need from the table below:

  • 5’6" – 66" (Approx 168cm)
  • 5’9" – 69" (Approx 175cm)
  • 6’0" – 72" (Approx 183cm)
  • 6’3" – 75" (Approx 191cm)
  • 6’6" – 78" (Approx 198cm)
  • 6’9" – 81" (Approx 206cm)
  • 7’0" – 84" (Approx 213cm)

If your horse is between sizes, rounding up the largest size often ensures a more comfortable fit.

Rug Fitting Top Tip: When checking the fit of your new horse rug, make sure your horse is clean before trying it on. If that’s not practical, pop a lightweight sheet underneath to keep the rug protected. This helps to keep it free from hair and marks should you need to return it if the fit isn’t quite right. Please note that soiled items may void your right to return.
