A2 Horse Clipper Blades for Heavy Duty Clippers

A2 blades are the workhorse of equine clipping. They are wider and heavier than A5 blades as they are designed for heavy duty horse clippers like the Masterclip HD Roamer and Hunter.

A5 Horse Clipper Blades for Medium Duty Clippers

A5 blades are smaller, lighter and designed for medium duty clippers like the Masterclip Showmate II and Royale. Their lighter weight makes them ideal for precision work — clipping legs, faces, bridle paths and sensitive areas where a larger A2 blade would be cumbersome.

A5 is also the most common clipper blade format worldwide, which means Masterclip A5 blades fit a huge range of brands including Andis, Oster and Moser.

Clipping Blades for Horses with Thick or Sensitive Coats

Not every horse's coat is the same, and not every blade works for every coat. Clipping blades for horses with thick winter coats need coarse teeth and heavy duty build quality to avoid jamming or pulling. Sensitive or fine-coated horses need blades with smoother cutting action and closer tooth spacing.

For thick coats, we recommend coarse A2 blades paired with a heavy duty clipper. For fine coats, nervous horses or competition preparation, fine A5 blades give a cleaner, quieter finish.

How to Care for Your Horse Clipper Blades

Blade care is the single biggest factor in how long your blades last. Four rules:

1. Oil before, during and after every clip. A few drops of clipper oil on the teeth every 5–10 minutes reduces friction and heat
2. Clean blades after every use. Brush away hair, wipe with a soft cloth, apply light oil before storing
3. Sharpen every 5–10 hours of use. Dull blades pull hair and cause discomfort
4. Store blades in a dry case. Moisture ruins even the best German steel
