The question is always whether it has the stamina for a full coat - and ours are built as heavy-duty machines first, cordless second. Both models below run A2 blades at 2,300RPM.

Will a cordless clipper get through a full winter coat?

It is the right question to ask, because plenty of cordless clippers are light-duty machines with a battery bolted on. The HD Roamer is not one of them. It runs at 2,300RPM on A2 toughened steel Cool Ridge blades - the same blade system used on our mains heavy-duty clippers - and it is rated for any coat type, native breeds and thick winter coats included.

At 1.2kg it stays manageable through a long session, and the slim design increases manoeuvrability around the horse's body and gives you more clipping control. Anti-vibration motor mounts keep it comfortable in the hand, which stops mattering in the first ten minutes and starts mattering a great deal by the third horse.

Two batteries, and planning a session around them

The HD Roamer comes with two Li-ion rechargeable batteries, each giving roughly two hours of run time - around four hours of clipping from a full charge, with the charging unit included.

The battery sits inside the handset rather than on a belt pack, so there is no lead, nothing strapped to you and nothing to catch on a rug or a stable door.

Worth knowing before a busy day: each battery takes three hours to charge and runs for two, so the pair won't rotate indefinitely. If you clip commercially or run a yard, a third battery is the difference between finishing and stopping.

A2 blades: what fits, and what doesn't

Your clipper arrives with A2 fine 1.5mm Cool Ridge blades. Superfine, medium and coarse A2 blades are available separately, so one clipper covers everything from a show finish to a native's winter coat. The medium 2.5mm blade is a good choice on grey horses, and the coarse 4.5mm Covercote skimming blade suits pink skin and show horses.

One thing to check before you order: Masterclip A2 blades are compatible with Lister clippers, but some of the newer A2 Lister blades do not fit this clipper. If you are buying blades to fit a machine you already own, confirm the fitment first.

For the head, ears and other intricate areas, the Masterclip A5 8.5W wide blade with its 2.4mm cut pairs well with the A2 1.5mm - similar cutting depth, and it fits any standard A5 clipper that takes snap-on blades.

Quiet clipping for nervous horses

No cable to trip over, 1.2kg in the hand, and anti-vibration motor mounts that keep noise and buzz down. It is not a silent clipper - nothing that cuts through a winter coat is - but for a horse that plants at the sound of a mains machine, cordless removes two of the three things it is objecting to.

One clipper, two jobs: the HD Roamer Multiblade

If you keep more than horses, the HD Roamer Multiblade comes with a horse clipping blade and a livestock blade on the same A2 head - heavy-duty horse clipping, dagging sheep, and dirty or show cattle from one machine. It takes A2 Lister livestock blades and ships with the same two batteries, charger, carry case, clipper oil and cleaning brush. Fitted with the horse blade it runs about two hours per battery; on the livestock blade, closer to one.

Cordless or mains?

If you always clip within reach of a socket, a mains clipper gives you unlimited run time and one less thing to remember. Cordless earns its place when the power is not there, when the horse objects to the cable, or when you are working across a yard rather than in one stable. Most people who switch do so for the second reason rather than the first.
