Before you order
Which of the four should a yard buy?
The Hunter and HD Roamer are the heavy duty pair — equally powerful, rated for every coat type, and both used by working grooms as a main clipper. Mains or cordless is the only real question between them.
The MAX is medium duty and cordless: lighter coats, partial clips and difficult areas, at £209.99. The Showmate II is a trimmer, not a clipper — it finishes a job the others start.
What is the difference between the MAX and the HD Roamer?
Both are cordless with two batteries. The HD Roamer is heavy duty, takes A2 blades and will clip any coat. The MAX is medium duty, takes A5 blades, and is rated for light to medium coats and partial clips.
The MAX is quieter and lower vibration, which is why it is the one we point at nervous and sensitive horses. It is also £90 less.
Which will cope with thick, coarse and dirty coats?
The Hunter and the HD Roamer. Both are rated for all coat types — the clipper supplies the power, the blade decides the finish. The MAX is specified for light to medium coats, so do not buy it as a full-body machine for natives in December.
For yards that also handle sheep or cattle, the HD Roamer Multiblade ships with a livestock blade.
Do they all take the same blades?
No, and it is worth knowing before you stock a shelf. The Hunter and HD Roamer share the A2 head — superfine, fine, medium and coarse, £49.99 each. The MAX runs A5 blades. The Showmate II uses comb guides rather than blades.
How long do the batteries last?
The HD Roamer is supplied with two lithium-ion batteries at roughly two hours each, stored in the handset. The MAX also ships with two fast-charge batteries and a charging dock, so one is always on charge.
When a battery does eventually tire, it is a part like any other: a spare HD Roamer battery is £49.99.
How much downtime should we plan for?
Most is avoidable — a £14.99 set of brushes fixes the commonest fault in the tack room. When a machine does come to us, a service is £39.99 and turnaround is currently about five business days. We will not guarantee that in November, so send it in over the summer.
Do you offer trade accounts or bulk pricing?
No. The price is the price, whether you buy one clipper or five. What we do offer is what actually costs a yard money over ten years: parts sold individually, a 2 year warranty and our own repair workshop.
Do these blades fit the Listers we already have?
Masterclip A2 blades are compatible with Lister clippers, and fit the A2 head on the Hunter, HD Roamer, Ranger and V-Series. The reverse is not always true: some newer A2 Lister blades do not fit ours. The MAX is a separate A5 system.
Buying guide
Specifying clippers for a yard
Start with the coats, not the catalogue
A yard with thoroughbreds in full work, a couple of natives and a grey has one clipper problem and four blade problems. Any heavy duty machine will take the coat off; what changes between horses is the cut length. Specify the machine once, then buy blades against the horses you actually have.
Mains or cordless
This is not a power decision. The Hunter is mains powered at 200W and 2600rpm; the HD Roamer is cordless at 2300rpm on two rechargeable batteries. Both are heavy duty, both take the same A2 head, and both are used as a main clipper by working grooms.
Specify mains where there is power at the stable and you want unlimited run time and the lighter 1.0kg handset. Specify cordless for yards without power, for contractors moving between yards, and where a trailing cable is a real hazard — a wriggling cord unsettles some horses, and one stood on is one damaged.
The blade range
- Superfine 0.75mm — show finish, shortest cut in the range.
- Fine 1.5mm — the standard winter body clip. Supplied with both clippers.
- Medium 2.5mm — more coat left on. Greys, sensitive skin, horses going straight back out.
- Coarse 4.5mm — covercote skimming for long guard hairs, pink skin and spring clipping.
All four are precision-ground toughened Japanese steel with a grooved “Cool Ridge” back comb that dissipates heat and improves airflow, at £49.99 each. They fit the Hunter, HD Roamer, Ranger and V-Series, and are compatible with Lister clippers — though some newer A2 Lister blades do not fit ours.
Cost of ownership, not cost of purchase
The number that matters to a yard is what the machine costs over ten seasons, not what it costs in October. Masterclip publishes the price of every component: air filters at £6.99, brushes at £14.99, a drive cog at £14.99, a PCB at £24.99, an HD Roamer motor at £39.99, a complete head at £74.99. A heavy duty service at our own Leicestershire workshop is £39.99, with parts at cost and a quote by email before any work is carried out. Blade sharpening is handled by Shear Ease rather than in-house.
Compare that against a machine where the manufacturer sells no parts at all. That is the difference between a clipper you support and a clipper you replace.
Running one clipper, or several
There are no trade accounts and no quantity pricing — the price is the price. What reduces cost across a multi-machine yard is standardising on one blade system, so a single shelf of A2 blades covers both heavy duty clippers, and stocking the two or three wear parts that actually fail. The medium duty MAX runs A5 blades, so treat it as a second system if you buy one.
