The Irish Red Setter is known for its distinctive, rich red coat, which is generally short and fine over the head and front of the legs, with longer, silky hair across the body and characteristic feathering on the ears, chest, underside, backs of the legs and tail. Regular brushing and combing are important for removing loose and dead hair, preventing tangles and maintaining the coat in good condition. Particular attention should be given to areas where the longer feathering can become tangled or matted, including behind the ears, beneath the legs, around the chest and underside, and between and around the feet.

While the Irish Red Setter’s natural coat is traditionally maintained through brushing, combing, trimming and careful shaping, clipping can be a practical option for pet dogs where a shorter, more manageable coat is preferred or where coat condition, lifestyle or maintenance requirements make regular clipping desirable. This carefully selected blade combination provides excellent versatility for close hygiene work, general body clipping and tackling thicker, longer or less prepared areas of coat.

The #10F blade is ideal for close clipping work, making it particularly useful for the feet, paw pads and hygiene areas, helping to create a clean, tidy finish where precision is essential.

For general body clipping, the #5F blade leaves approximately 6.4mm of coat, providing a neat, manageable finish while producing a smooth and even appearance. The full tooth design makes it particularly useful when a clean, consistent finish is required across larger areas of the coat.

The #5 Skip Tooth blade also leaves approximately 6.4mm of coat but features wider-spaced teeth designed to feed thicker, longer or less prepared coat through the blade more effectively. This makes it particularly useful for initial clipping, working through denser areas and reducing bulk before refining the coat where required.

Together, the #10F, #5F and #5 Skip Tooth blades provide a versatile grooming combination for the Irish Red Setter. The #10F handles close and detailed work, the #5 Skip Tooth is useful for working through longer or denser coat, and the #5F provides a smooth, professional finish for general body clipping.
