Before clipping, always make sure that your dog is washed and thoroughly dried. All tangles and matted areas must be brushed through to allow the clippers to glide through the hair.

Teeth on the skip tooth blades are set further apart to help feed the hair into the cutter, so great care must be taken when using these blades. Ensure that the blade is always held flat and runs with the contour of the coat and never at an angle whilst clipping.

The Andis blade coolant and disinfectant spray is an excellent way of keeping your blades cool whilst clipping. Not only is it a blade coolant, it is also a lubricant, disinfectant, blade cleaner and rust preventative which all help to reduce friction when clipping.

The Saint Bernard is classed as a heavy coated breed and needs to be routinely brushed about three times a week to prevent their coats from becoming tangled and unruly. Long haired Saint Bernard’s should be brushed with a slicker brush to remove excess hair. When they shed, a wide coat rake will help manage the copious piles of hair that will be generated. To help him stay tidy, it is wise to trim the coat. To lessen the chance of mats and tangles developing, use a 4 skip tooth blade on the underbelly, legs and backend, being careful not to cut into the tail. The number 10 blade is useful for chipping away under any existing matted areas and also around the face, on the tops of the feet and pads. Pay particular attention to trimming around and between the pads and also the face and ears. Use selective trimming to control matting around the tail, legs, and sanitary areas going with the flow of the fur. Clipping is an essential way of managing the coat and keeping your dog healthy and happy, by preventing the mats and tangles which can cause irritation.

If you wish to clip the entire coat off please contact us and we can recommend the best option for your needs.
