It is always better to hand strip coarse coated terriers and all wirehaired dogs,  this keeps the coat rich in colour and removes the soft dead undercoat and thins the coat down so it is less bushy.  Always tug the hair in the direction that it grows in.  It is best to use scissors in the more sensitive areas and the knife on the back and sides.
