Keeping your dog cool during the summer months

Tim Ryman |

As the temperature rises and we start to enjoy the warmer days we must remember that our dogs don’t enjoy the heat as much as we do and we need to take steps to keep them cool.

  • Always ensure there is a supply of fresh water to drink and take water with you on walks.
  • Take them for walks when it is cooler early in the morning and late at night.
  • Choose shady places to walk if possible.
  • If you are out and about with them in the heat avoid walking on pavements as they can get burnt pads. If it’s too hot for your bare feet it’s too hot for dog’s paws.
  • Never leave your dog alone in the car and if you do need to take a car journey allow time to have plenty of water stops.
  • If it’s unusually hot make sure your dog has a cool shady place to sit. Cool them down by wrapping in cool wet towels or provide a wet mat to lie on.

If you notice your dog panting a lot more than usual and dribbling these may be early signs of heatstroke so after taking all the steps you can to cool them down if they don’t appear to be well you need to call your vet. Dogs don’t sweat in the same way that we do they pant and sweat through their paws and heatstroke can be fatal!

Dogs with double coats shed their thick winter undercoats as the temperature rises to leave a finer undercoat for the summer months so regular grooming is important to aid the dogs natural process of cooling.  It is a good idea to invest in a good coat rake or slicker brush. Click here to see the range of professional grooming rakes and slickers that Masterclip have to offer.

If you have a dog that requires regular clipping, like us they feel refreshed after a good hair cut!
