In the Forties, the Russian Army began to develop a breed of dog for their own needs, producing a large robust dog that was willing to work and withstand enormous climatic changes. Despite its name, the Russian Black Terrier is not a true terrier: It is believed that approximately seventeen breeds were used in its development, including the Airedale, the Giant Schnauzer, the Rottweiler, the Newfoundland, amongst others.
