Originating in the area of Tibet over 4,000 years ago as a small breed of mountain wolf, they were domesticated and actively bred from as long ago as 800 BC, making it one of the oldest recognised breeds in the world.

Its primary function was that of a household sentinel guarding the homes of Tibetan nobility and Buddhist monasteries, particularly in or near the city of Lhasa.

Though quite small in stature, the Lhasa Aspo in a sturdy and independent dog, who often thinks he is much bigger than he it. This dog possesses a very protective nature and although never usually aggressive, he is fierce and naturally quite suspicious of strangers, making them excellent little watchdogs.

The Lhasa Apso has a double coat that is long and flowing. It needs regular maintenance to keep it looking its best and it should be brushed out every day as this will help keep the coat mat and tangle free.
