Labradoodle Grooming: Clippers, Scissors & Kits

Wool and fleece Labradoodle coats are low shedding, so the hair doesn't fall out the way a Labrador's does. It needs clipping to stay comfortable and free from mats. Our Labradoodle clipper sets come with three A5 blades chosen for the breed: a #10 for the face, feet and back end, plus #7 and #5 skip tooth blades for the body. Browse the clipper sets, scissors and nail clippers below.

Labradoodle Coat Types and Why They Need Clipping

The Labradoodle is a cross between the Labrador and the Standard or Miniature Poodle, and the coat can take after either side.

  • Wool coats have tight curls, similar to a Poodle.
  • Fleece coats are soft and free-flowing, and hang in loose curls.
  • Hair coats are straighter or wavy, closer to a Labrador's, and shed more than the other two.

Wool and fleece coats hold on to hair rather than dropping it. Left to grow, the coat becomes dense and heavy, particularly around the legs, chest and tail, and that is where tangles and mats start. Regular clipping keeps it manageable.

How to Groom a Labradoodle at Home

  1. Wash and dry the coat thoroughly.
  2. Brush out tangles and matted areas before you clip. You'll find brushes and combs in our grooming accessories.
  3. Clip the body with a skip tooth blade. Skip tooth blades are designed to feed thicker coats into the blade more efficiently, so they glide through dense, curly fur.
  4. Tidy the face, feet and back end with the #10 blade. It leaves 1.5mm of coat for a clean, hygienic finish in sensitive areas.
  5. Finish with scissors. Use rounded-tip bull nose scissors around the eyes, ears, muzzle and paws, and thinning scissors to blend bulky areas on the legs, chest and tail.
  6. Check the nails. Use clippers with a safety stop and take care not to cut into the quick.

Labradoodle Haircuts: Short Clip, Puppy Cut and Teddy Bear Cut

The cut you choose mostly comes down to how much coat you want to leave on.

Short, easy-care clip. The #7 skip tooth blade leaves approximately 3.2mm of coat. Ideal for shorter, practical trims that are easy to maintain.

Puppy cut. For an even, fuller finish all over, the #5 skip tooth blade leaves approximately 6.4mm, keeping the coat soft and fluffy without the bulk.

Teddy bear cut. For a longer, rounder look, you need to leave more coat than any blade on its own. Fit a metal comb guide over the #10 blade. Single guides go up to 32mm, and the 19mm and 22mm guides are ideal for Doodle breeds. Shape the head, feet and tail with curved scissors to finish.

Whichever cut you choose, the #10 blade takes care of the face, feet and sanitary areas.

Choosing a Labradoodle Clipper Set

All four sets include the same three blades: #10, #7 skip tooth and #5 skip tooth. The difference is the clipper.

  • Labradoodle Clipper Set - Cordless MAX: supplied with two rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, so you can charge one while using the other. Quiet running with low vibration, Japanese steel blades and a detachable snap-on, snap-off blade system.
  • Labradoodle Dog Clippers Set - Cordless PRO: Japanese steel blades, a robust motor that makes light work of thick coats, and a slim, ergonomic design for longer grooming sessions.
  • Labradoodle Dog Clipper Set - Cordless: the MD Roamer cordless clipper, with two rechargeable lithium-ion batteries stored in the handset, a charge time of around 1 hour and run time of around 2 hours, and a non-slip rubberised handle.
  • Labradoodle Dog Clipper Set - Mains: the Pedigree mains-powered twin speed clipper, weighing only 375g, with a sturdy carry case and a free sample of clipper oil.

Every set uses A5 blades, so replacement A5 dog clipping blades fit, and so do our metal comb guides. See the full range of professional dog clippers.

Scissors and Nail Care for Labradoodles

Labradoodle hair grows quickly, especially on the face and feet, so scissors do a lot of the work between full clips.

Also Suitable for Other Poodle Crosses

The PRO and MAX Labradoodle sets are also suited to other Poodle-cross breeds with thick, curly or wavy coats. For breed-specific sets, see our Cockapoo, Cavapoo and Poodle ranges, or browse dog grooming by breed.

Labradoodle Grooming Questions

Do Labradoodles need to be clipped?

Wool and fleece coats do. They are low shedding, so the hair builds up rather than falling out. Without regular clipping, the coat becomes dense and prone to mats.

Which blade should I use on a Labradoodle's face and feet?

The #10 blade, which leaves 1.5mm of coat. It's included in every Labradoodle clipper set and is also used for the back end.

How much coat do the #7 and #5 skip tooth blades leave?

The #7 skip tooth leaves approximately 3.2mm and the #5 skip tooth leaves approximately 6.4mm.

How do I leave a Labradoodle's coat longer for a teddy bear cut?

Fit a metal comb guide over the #10 blade. Single guides go up to 32mm, and the 19mm and 22mm guides are ideal for Doodle breeds.

Should I brush my Labradoodle before clipping?

Yes. Wash and dry the coat thoroughly, then brush out tangles and matted areas before you start clipping.

Which Labradoodle clipper set is quiet?

The Cordless MAX is designed for quiet running with low vibration, which helps keep both you and your dog relaxed.

What size nail clippers does a Labradoodle need?

Our Labradoodle Nail Clippers come in Large, designed for medium to large breeds.
